Recognizing new revenue opportunities, today's service providers are leveraging their existing broadband access infrastructure to deploy Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services along with high-speed Internet access and other multi-media applications. In deploying VoIP, the key issue is the signaling and control protocol between the equipment at the customer premise and the central office (CO) of the service provider.
This white paper compares the key signaling and control protocols available for successful deployment of today's multi-media applications and services. These include Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP), the similar H.248/Media Gateway Control (H.248/MEGACO), and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP).
